How to Prep for Your Prom Spray Tan
The two-day plan.

Prom is one of the most-booked weeks of our year, and there’s one question we get more than any other: when should I book my spray tan? The answer is short — one or two days before prom — but the reasoning is worth knowing so the tan comes out looking like you meant it, instead of looking like you squeezed it in.

Why one to two days is the sweet spot

A spray tan is a cosmetic reaction between the DHA in the solution and the top layer of your skin. That reaction takes 8 to 24 hours to play out. A fresh-out-of-the-tent tan looks bronzer-on-top (because it is — that’s the cosmetic tint we use to see where we’ve sprayed). The true color only emerges after your first rinse, usually 1 to 5 hours after the appointment.

If you tan the morning of prom, you skip the development window. The shade will still look too fresh, the bronzer tint is more likely to transfer, and the color will keep developing during prom — ending up deeper in your photos than you expected.

If you tan three or more days out, you’re giving the tan an extra day to start fading before prom even happens. Two days is the balance point: fully developed, rinsed, settled, and still at peak color.

Day -2: Exfoliate and hair removal

Two days before prom, do two things:

• Exfoliate your whole body with a non-oil-based scrub or a washcloth. Focus on elbows, knees, ankles, and the back of your hands — those spots absorb color fastest and can look too dark if they start with dry skin.
• Shave or wax your legs and underarms. Doing it later than 24 hours before the appointment leaves the pores open and can lead to tiny dark dots on the skin where the solution settled in.

Day -1: The tan itself

The day of the tan, follow a short list of don’ts:

• No lotion, body oil, or sunscreen.
• No deodorant, perfume, or body spray.
• No makeup on the face that you’re not planning to wash off.
• Shower 3 to 4 hours before the appointment with a gentle, non-moisturizing soap. Dove bar and most drugstore body washes leave a film; a sulfate-free clear body wash is ideal.

Bring dark, loose clothes to change into after. Anything tight (bra straps, leggings, anything with ribbing) can leave temporary pressure marks while the tan is still setting.

After the tan, you have a 1-to-5-hour window before your first rinse. Don’t sweat, shower, swim, or get caught in the rain. Loose clothing, no hugging anyone in a white shirt, no gym.

Day of prom

The night before or morning of prom (per the aftercare card you get at your appointment), take one rinse in warm (not hot) water. No soap. Gently run water over your skin until it runs clear, pat dry with a towel — don’t rub.

After that shower, the tan is locked in. You can apply light deodorant, makeup, hairspray — all the normal getting-ready stuff. Oil-based products are the thing to keep avoiding (they break the tan down faster than anything else).

Common questions for prom groups

Can the whole group get tanned at one house?

Yes. That’s most of how our prom tans happen — we come to a host house with the full kit and work through the roster back-to-back. You drop the event link in the group chat, every girl picks her own time, and we run the session cleanly scheduled so there’s no crowding.

Who pays?

Your call at booking. Mom or dad can put a card on file and cover the whole event, or every girl pays her own at checkout. Both options surface cleanly in the event link.
